How to Develop and Maintain Situational Awareness in a Foreign Country
Jed Kirkman, Director of Personnel Protection, CIA, focuses upon the various resources and methods available to obtain information and intelligence on threat in an area, region or entire foreign country. Get practical and useful insight on how open source, public sector and private sector resources can be leveraged to gain and maintain situational awareness when needed to provide security for a major meeting or event.

Doing Business in an Unstable or Weak Nation State

The Threat of Narco Terrorism: A Situational Report
The present status of drug trafficking in certain countries, including Mexico, is featured in this session. The speaker, from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, provides the present threat matrix to business interests and guidance to conference participants.

The speaker provides insight from the Foreign Service’s perspective on the challenges they are presently experiencing, and how those conditions are anticipated to change in the future. The speaker also provides guidance to the members on what resources might be available to assist corporations interested in doing business in those countries.

Day Two

Through learning intelligence gathering, surveillance detection, prevention and disruption techniques attendees are better armed to combat this frightening and costly threat.

ASIS Toronto Chapter – Launches Revised Employment Opportunity Area

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

One area of the website that receives substantial web traffic is the ASIS Toronto Chapter Employment area. This area was identified as a part of the websiteiStock_000007514528XSmall that could be improved upon and work was commenced by the Chapter’s web design firm, Silentblast Interactive.

The new employment area actually encompasses two unique areas. One area is for Employers or those offering security industry profession careers is the Registration area. http://asistoronto.org/employers.php

Here an employer fills out the required information and this in turn grants the individual the ability to post an employment opportunity. If you can cut, paste and type with word processors you can fill in the information. Once submitted; the employment opportunity is not live right away. A message is sent to the Webmaster for the ASIS Toronto Chapter and after review the post is approved. Upon approval the posting is then live on the website.

The system is improved in that Employers can now directly submit employment opportunities. There are no limits to how many employment opportunities are available. The registered employer manages their own opportunities by both being able to add new opportunities as well as remove ones that have been filled.

With the website targeting a very specific community; providing an area for Employers to submit employment opportunities brings both awareness of ASIS International and the ASIS Toronto Chapter to those in the industry seeking employment but also Employers who may have heard of ASIS International and are exploring their options on an association to join or commit to.

To register and submit employment opportunities is free.

ANSI/ASIS Organizational Resilience Standard

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Dear Volunteer Leaders:

It is imperative that security management professionals voice their support for the ANSI/ASIS Organizational Resilience Standard as a preparedness standard in the PS-Prep Program by submitting comments to the Federal Register Public Notice/Docket ID: FEMA-2008-0017.  Comments are due 11/15/09.  As I have been saying all year, Standards and Guidelines are going to be written.  We need to be at the table in a leadership role and this is our opportunity.

The following are instructions for submitting comments:

Some Points to consider:

  • It is the only preparedness standard that takes an enterprise-wide view of risk management, enabling an organization to develop a comprehensive strategy to prevent when possible, prepare for, mitigate, respond to, and recover from a disruptive incident.
  • It is also the only preparedness standard that is 100% compatible with existing ISO management system standards (such as ISO 9000, ISO 14000, ISO 27000 and ISO 28000), thus enabling a cost-saving integrated application.
  • The choice of which standard to use should be what fits a company’s business and management style.  They all help improve preparedness, so any of the three standards identified in the Federal Register should be adopted by the PS-Prep Program.

For additional informational points on the ANSI/ASIS Organizational Resilience Standard: http://www.asisonline.org/guidelines/or.xml

DHS PS-Prep Program information can be found on:  http://www.fema.gov/privatesectorpreparedness.

Sincerely,

Michael R. Cummings, CPP

Certification Announcements- Important Update for CPP PCI Exams

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Implementation of New CPP, PCI Exam Test Forms to Begin on May 1, 2010.

In 2008, ASIS International undertook an update of the domains, tasks, and knowledge areas comprising the test content outline for the CPP and PCI examination programs by conducting worldwide Job Analyses (also known as role delineation studies). The new CPP and PCI exam forms, which will be administered beginning May 1, 2010, were developed using updated test specifications (examination blueprints) that resulted from these newly updated Job Analyses. A Job Analysis describes the major areas of responsibility (i.e., domains of practice) in a profession, the specific work-related tasks associated with each domain, and the knowledge and skills that are necessary to perform the tasks. This type of study is conducted every 5 years to ensure that examination content remains relevant, current, and accurately reflects job-related activities, competencies, and professional standards.

Please note that all candidates scheduled to test before May 1, 2010, will test with examinations developed from the current test specifications. All CPP and PCI exam questions are developed using the CPP and PCI reference books. Hence, it is recommended that candidates focus their preparation for the examination using these books.

To review the changes in the CPP and PCI Exams please download the documents below.
