PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Day One

How to Develop and Maintain Situational Awareness in a Foreign Country
Jed Kirkman, Director of Personnel Protection, CIA, focuses upon the various resources and methods available to obtain information and intelligence on threat in an area, region or entire foreign country. Get practical and useful insight on how open source, public sector and private sector resources can be leveraged to gain and maintain situational awareness when needed to provide security for a major meeting or event.

Doing Business in an Unstable or Weak Nation State
This presentation with both public and private representation provides a broad overview of the challenges corporate security can face in a foreign country, and some helpful guidance on how to properly assess threat and vulnerability prior to doing business in an unstable region or weak nation state.

The Threat of Narco Terrorism: A Situational Report
The present status of drug trafficking in certain countries, including Mexico, is featured in this session. The speaker, from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, provides the present threat matrix to business interests and guidance to conference participants.

State Department Perspectives on Global Instability
The U.S. State Department provides an overview of the instability in certain key countries. The speaker provides insight from the Foreign Service’s perspective on the challenges they are presently experiencing, and how those conditions are anticipated to change in the future. The speaker also provides guidance to the members on what resources might be available to assist corporations interested in doing business in those countries.

Day Two

Kidnapping: Still a Challenge for Corporate Security
General insight and case studies regarding the continuing problem of kidnapping in foreign countries is the centerpiece of this session. Through sharing “best practices” and “lessons learned,” the speaker enables attendees to gain valuable insight on the early warning signs when a corporate executive may be the subject of pre-operational surveillance. Through learning intelligence gathering, surveillance detection, prevention and disruption techniques attendees are better armed to combat this frightening and costly threat.

ANSI/ASIS Organizational Resilience Standard

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Dear Volunteer Leaders:

It is imperative that security management professionals voice their support for the ANSI/ASIS Organizational Resilience Standard as a preparedness standard in the PS-Prep Program by submitting comments to the Federal Register Public Notice/Docket ID: FEMA-2008-0017.  Comments are due 11/15/09.  As I have been saying all year, Standards and Guidelines are going to be written.  We need to be at the table in a leadership role and this is our opportunity.

The following are instructions for submitting comments:

Some Points to consider:

  • It is the only preparedness standard that takes an enterprise-wide view of risk management, enabling an organization to develop a comprehensive strategy to prevent when possible, prepare for, mitigate, respond to, and recover from a disruptive incident.
  • It is also the only preparedness standard that is 100% compatible with existing ISO management system standards (such as ISO 9000, ISO 14000, ISO 27000 and ISO 28000), thus enabling a cost-saving integrated application.
  • The choice of which standard to use should be what fits a company’s business and management style.  They all help improve preparedness, so any of the three standards identified in the Federal Register should be adopted by the PS-Prep Program.

Sincerely,

Michael R. Cummings, CPP
